Few days back I watched a show on discovery channel which tried to establish a link between dinosaurs and birds, it said that possibly birds evolved from dinosaurs. It showcased many reasons for the same. Mainly the similarity between the skeletons of the birds and dinosaurs was too convincing, such similarity to the dinosaurs is not scene in any other living creature on earth. Also dinosaurs are believed to have respiratory systems similar to modern birds.
As the dinosaurs are said to be reptiles ( As they had no fur, laid eggs, their skin had scales, and many of their species were cold blodded ) after watching that show, I started wondering whether birds are close to reptiles, though birds are not technically reptiles as they are warm blooded as opposed to reptiles which are cold blooded. But there are many similarities, which are following
- Birds and reptiles both lay eggs
- Birds and reptiles show some skeletal similarities
- Birds have feathers, which are said to be modified scales
- Birds feet have scales
Even whether dinosaurs were reptiles, is too debatable, as it’s still not sure whether they were warm blooded or cold blooded. Till the mid 20th century it was believed that dinosaurs were cold blooded, slow moving creatures, but later research has found that they were very active animals and could have been warm blooded. This issue is still debatable. Also one dissimilarity between dinosaurs and reptiles is that the legs of dinosaurs were directly below their hips, like in mammals and unlike in lizards.
So, the conclusion of the above is that there are similarities between both birds and reptiles and dinosaurs and reptiles, so scientists established a theory that both birds and reptiles had a common ancestor in dinosaurs. But there are many who even believe that birds are not evolved from dinosaurs but birds are dinosaurs.
Many may think that why I’m discussing such a topic, or how does it matter if birds are close to reptiles. But it matters to me because I used to like birds and used to not like reptiles. In fact I hate reptiles, I become restless if I spot a lizard on the walls and cant live in such a place. So, now after watching that show on discovery and analyzing similarities between birds and reptiles, I didn’t really enjoy this fact.

@ Vivek : I like both birdies and reptiles. In fact I find house lizards very cute. I often sit in the verandah with a drink watching these feisty little creatures eat up bugs. Some people have pet iguanas which are quite nice. Although I will be honest I have never handled a reptile till yet but that is mostly from the fact that I have no idea how to do it. I have had birds as pets though.

Somehow, this whole theory of evolution seems to me to be fundamentally flawed. It is a evolution, i.e. a very slow process of change to another form altogether. This means that at any give time, there must be living creatures at various stages of development and change, differentiated by small incremental variations on a scale. But that is not visible. It seems as if every animal, insect etc ‘evolved’ millions of years back to the living version we see, after which the process magically stopped!

Vinod, a western scientist recently stated that the humans in the western world has stopped evolving………..I ‘m planning to write a post on the topic soon
But i dont think, the theory is flawed, because it happens in a course of lakhs of years, and yes many of the creatures living today may not be same, say 5 lakh years from now..

Vivekmittal-
It is theorized that some dinosaurs, most often mentioned are the Therapods, or carnivors related to the Tyrannosaurus, were in fact warm blooded.
Feathers are modified scales, and it is also postulated (mostly from fossil imprints), that Archaeopteryx was not the only primitive reptile to have feathers. Again, Therapods are those being considered.
Vinod-
Evolution is not a proccess that we ourselves can readily observe (unless you wish to discuss the theory of quantum evolution). It does, in fact, take millions of years. The current species have not stopped evolving. Every species in existance is constantly changing, but on such a small level that it doesn’t matter in the short term. Every new organism introduces thousands, if not millions, of new mutations into their bloodline. Whether or not they are propogated in the species is dependant on whether or not the individuals possessing them become more successful than their predecessors. Thus, it literally takes millions of years for any change to occur.
Vivekmittal, again-
Whiel many scientists do indeed postulate that the human race has ceased to evolve, it is highly unlikely, if not completely false. Again, new mutations are introduced with each new generation. Thus, as long as new organisms are born, mutation, and therefore evolution, will continue. Again, we will simply not see it in our lifetimes, or perhaps before our species becomes extinct.
It is also postulated that humans are indeed still evolving. Many scientists even theorize that the different races (white, black, east asian, and oceanic peoples) are actually sub-species of Homo sapiens (Caucasoid, Negroid, Mongoloid, and Australoid).
Sorry, I love scientific rants. My sceince teacher from last year and the year before (10th and 11th grade) and I were always ending up in long-winded discussions. IT was fun leavign the rest of the class behind, so to speak.
